Here is a simple explanation on how to use the Layer Palette in Paint Shop Pro v.8 and v.9. For a more detailed explanation go to your PSP. v.9 user guide on page 359 or in PSP v.8 on page 259.
Above is a picture of the layers palette. At the time of this screen shot I had open an image with many layers. Below is a few simple pointers on using the layer palette.
Adding a new layer- You can either go to your tool bar and choose Layers and then add a new Raster, Vector or Art Media layer. In most cases you will be working with Raster layers. Another option is to go to your Layer Palette and click on one of the first three boxes in the first row and then click O.K. (you can also name your layer while the new window is open.)
Naming layers- At first you may find it helpful to name your layers so as not to get confused and lost while working on a tutorial. Go to your selected layer, right click on the layer, and the click rename and choose a new name for your layer. Another way to name a layer is while you have the New Layer window open as mentioned above.
Turning off a layer- Simply go to the picture of the eye and click on it. When you see the red "X" this means that layer is now off and not visible.
Changing the transparency of a layer- Look at the photo above and notice the 3rd layer. See how the slider is set to 60 and the others are set to 100. Layer 3 is set to 60% transparency and the other layers are at 100% transparency. To do this simply take your mouse and move the slider to the transparency that works best for your image.
These are the basic functions that we will be using in our tutorials. For more detailed information about the layer palette refer to the above mentioned pages in your user manual.
